Team Tram or Team Bus?

What’s the future transport for the Gold Coast?

The Gold Coast has spent more than a decade building its light rail network south from Helensvale. But should the tram keep going, or are buses a better answer for the southern Gold Coast?

It has become one of the city’s most contentious transport debates.

The proposed Stage 4 of the Gold Coast Light Rail would have extended the tram approximately 13 km from Burleigh Heads through Palm Beach, Tugun and Gold Coast Airport to Coolangatta.

In September 2025, the Queensland Government stopped the project following a review and community consultation. The Government is now pursuing improved bus services, including a proposed GC Surfer metro-style bus service linking Robina, Varsity Lakes, Burleigh Heads, Gold Coast Airport and Coolangatta.

So, did the Government make the right decision?

So what are we really deciding?

This debate is bigger than whether people prefer a tram or a bus.

It raises questions about cost, population growth, congestion, neighbourhood character, development, environmental impact, flexibility and how we want the Gold Coast to function in 20, 30 or 50 years.

There may also be alternatives beyond a simple choice between trams and buses, including improved heavy rail, different routes, dedicated busways, better east-west connections, or a combination of several transport modes.

The Queensland Government is now undertaking broader regional transport planning.

The question remains: Are you on Team Trams or Team Buses or do you support an alternate solution – and tell us why.
